Big Power 16

Big Power 16

by Johny Midnight

A compelling study in contrasts - a convincingly real London sky above an expressively abstract power station under construction. Palette knife blues and mosaic pinks fill the Thames foreground, realism and abstraction held in perfect tension.

Limited edition fine art prints, hand-signed and numbered by the artist. Once the edition is sold out, it will not be reproduced.

  • Artwork Description

A realistically rendered sky of soft greys and whites anchors this painting firmly in the London atmosphere, contrasting powerfully with the loosely impressionistic treatment of the power station below. The building is textured, fragmented and alive with colour, multiple cranes surrounding it and referencing Battersea's period of active redevelopment. In the foreground, broad palette knife strokes of blue dominate, punctuated by mosaic-like flashes of bright pinks and magentas suggesting the River Thames broken into colour and rhythm. The result is a painting suspended between two worlds: calm realism above, expressive abstraction below.

  • Artist's Insight

I've always been fascinated by Battersea as a living structure - not frozen in time, but constantly evolving. By painting the sky realistically, I ground the viewer in a recognisable London moment. But the power station and river are allowed to shift, fragment and abstract, mirroring how the building itself was changing during redevelopment. The cranes are not just architectural details; they're symbols of progress, disruption and renewal. This balance between control and freedom - realism and abstraction - is a hallmark of my mature Battersea works, and Big Power 16 is one of the clearest expressions of that tension.
