Big Power 9

Big Power 9

by Johny Midnight

A vibrant and graphic interpretation of Battersea at sunset. The screen-printed sky layers in pinks and mauves, the station glows in deep reds and orange, and cranes dot the skyline - bold, joyful and full of urban energy.

Limited edition fine art prints, hand-signed and numbered by the artist. Once the edition is sold out, it will not be reproduced.

  • Artwork Description

Battersea Power Station is presented in a striking, almost graphic abstraction where colour and texture take precedence over realism. The foreground is impressionistic, built using sponges and palette knives - broken textures suggesting the River Thames rather than describing it. Above, the sky has a strong screen-print quality: bands of pinks, mauves and soft pastels evoking a glowing sunset, clouds stylised into flat, graphic rhythm. The power station is rendered in deep reds, blues and flashes of orange, its warm weight anchored by cranes that hint at Battersea's active period of redevelopment.

  • Artist's Insight

I describe Big Power 9 as one of the most fun paintings in the series. By this stage Battersea had become second nature - a subject I knew well enough to push, distort and exaggerate without losing its identity. I borrowed from screen printing and illustration while still grounding the piece in painterly texture. The cranes weren't added by accident; they reflect my fascination with Battersea as a living, changing structure rather than a static monument. This painting is about freedom - letting colour shout and allowing the building to become a symbol rather than just a structure.
