Power and People

Power and People

by Johny Midnight

Battersea Power Station as social destination - luminous magentas and pinks above, cartoon-like figures eating, drinking and gathering below. Cranes still dot the skyline as the building transitions from industrial landmark to living, vibrant meeting place.

  • Artwork Description

Battersea Power Station glows in luminous magentas and pinks, with shadowed areas in turquoise and deep Prussian blue. The sky and background are built using rollers, layering soft purples, blues, whites and greys into depth and atmosphere. Cranes rise throughout, suggesting a power station still in transition. In the foreground, stylised figures eat, drink and converse, painted in a playful almost cartoon-like manner - independent from yet intrinsically linked to the building above, as if dining along the River Thames beneath its iconic chimneys. The composition is poppy, expressive and full of life, inviting the viewer to explore the scene.

  • Artist's Insight

I wanted this painting to be about more than just Battersea as a building. It's about the people - the conversations, the social life, the everyday moments that now happen around it. The figures are slightly exaggerated and playful because this isn't meant to be serious or formal. It's meant to feel fun, lively and relatable. You can imagine yourself sitting there, eating, drinking, chatting, completely absorbed in the energy of the place. It hangs in a restaurant in Tooting at the moment, which feels entirely right - this is a painting that belongs where people gather.
