Big Power 56

Big Power 56

by Johny Midnight

A front view of Battersea Power Station across the River Thames - the building precise and proportional, the sky and water entirely abstract. Bold oranges, mustard, and pink against a muted pastel background. Where realism meets expression.

  • Artwork Description

Big Power 56 is a front-on view of Battersea Power Station from across the Thames. The building is constructed with accuracy - four chimneys, correct proportions, a clear riverside edge - while everything around it breaks into abstraction. The sky is built from broad, blocky planes of turquoise, blue, and soft pink. The Thames dissolves into loose marks of deep purple, amber, and reflected orange. A few cranes push into the mid-ground, adding depth. The power station blazes in warm oranges, mustard, and burnt sienna - colours that drop directly into the water as vivid reflection.

  • Artist's Insight

This painting was about finding the balance between getting the building right and letting the paint do what it wants. With Battersea, the architecture is strong enough that you can push everything else into abstraction, and it still reads immediately. The sky and water are completely free. The building is not. That tension is what makes it work. The oranges and mustards came naturally - the colours I have always associated with those brick facades in certain light. The purple in the Thames was less planned, but once it was there, it felt right.
