Prince of Wales

Prince of Wales

by Johny Midnight

A single blue whale hangs almost upright in deep Prussian water, the roller marks left deliberately unblended. Cubism meets the sea - light breaking across the surface, oil and acrylic pulling apart into pattern.

Limited edition fine art prints, hand-signed and numbered by the artist. Once the edition is sold out, it will not be reproduced.

  • Artwork Description

A lone blue whale hovers vertically in dark, deep-sea blue, the paint applied with a radiator roller whose marks are left visible rather than blended away. The unsmoothed strokes lend a faceted, near-cubist structure to the water, while light filters convincingly through the upper ocean. At the surface, oil and acrylic mixed together separate into unpredictable patterns. Deep, still and quietly monumental, it is the painting that began the nautical series.

  • Artist's Insight

This depicts a single blue whale, almost hovering upright in deep, dark water. What sets it apart from a lot of my work is the roller: I applied the Prussian blue with a radiator roller and, instead of blending from dark to light, chose to leave the marks in. My understanding of cubism was doing some of the work there. Getting the light to filter through the top of the ocean mattered, and the mixed oil and acrylic on the surface makes its own patterns.
