Purple Power

Purple Power

by Johny Midnight

A distinctive blend of architectural drawing and expressive painterly surface. Sketched cranes and linear structure sit within a soft pink, grey and blue sky, the power station appearing to float above the Thames in quiet, confident abstraction.

Limited edition fine art prints, hand-signed and numbered by the artist. Once the edition is sold out, it will not be reproduced.

  • Artwork Description

Battersea Power Station is presented through a blend of architectural line work and expressive painterly texture. The structure feels partially drawn - sketch-like cranes and linear elements hinting at construction and transition, these sharper marks softened by a sky painted in muted pinks, greys and pale blues. The foreground dissolves into layered colour, allowing the power station to appear as though floating above the Thames rather than firmly anchored to it. While abstract in approach, recognisable details within the building maintain a sense of reality, giving the viewer something familiar to hold onto amid the surrounding softness.

  • Artist's Insight

With Purple Power I wanted to balance drawing and painting. There's structure in the power station - almost like an architectural sketch - but the sky and foreground soften everything around it. The cranes are almost drawn rather than painted, which creates a different kind of mark on the canvas. It's abstract, but still grounded; strong, calm and floating all at once. I was interested in what happens when you let the precision of drawing meet the freedom of paint - they resist each other at first, then find a strange harmony.
