Quickest Way to Stromness

Quickest Way to Stromness

by Johny Midnight

Shackleton, Worsley and Crean toboggan without a sledge down the steep ice slopes of South Georgia - roped together, ragged, frostbitten and laughing. Stromness, and the salvation of their crew, lies just below.

  • Artwork Description

Three men hurtle down a near-vertical ice slope, strapped together, clothing in rags, balaclavas crusted with frozen breath. And yet their faces carry unmistakable grins. Midnight's foreground is thick with sculptural white oil, broken by flashes of turquoise; behind them the mountain wall rises in jagged black and grey stone. The sky is flat, cold and heavy. After 36 hours crossing the uncharted interior of South Georgia, this reckless, joyful descent - without a sledge - was the fastest route to Stromness and the rescue of their stranded crew. The most unexpected moment of elation in the entire saga.

  • Artist's Insight

I wanted the viewer to feel the madness of it - their exhaustion, their bravery, and that strange moment where life hangs in the balance, yet the men laugh. It was reckless, heroic, and utterly necessary. The mountain crossing had never been done before. Thirty-six hours without sleep, without proper equipment. And then they sat down on a coil of rope and slid. I've painted the grins because they're documented - and because that detail tells you everything about the kind of men they were.
