Red, Gold and Green

Red, Gold and Green

by Johny Midnight

Three racing yachts viewed from behind, their spinnakers of red, deep green and gold filling the canvas. A jubilant, Caribbean-inflected regatta scene built with palette knives and vivid unapologetic colour.

Limited edition fine art prints, hand-signed and numbered by the artist. Once the edition is sold out, it will not be reproduced.

  • Artwork Description

The spinnakers are so large and so close that the hulls beneath them are almost irrelevant - three great sails in red, deep green and gold dominate a canvas that swirls with turquoise, Prussian blue and the curling foam of competitive sailing. Palette knives are the primary tool here, the colour applied in broad, decisive strokes that carry the energy of the Caribbean itself. A fourth sail - smaller, blue - appears at the left edge, and a whole fleet is implied beyond the frame. The ocean is movement and the sky is receding, grey and understated.

  • Artist's Insight

The colours are a direct reference to the Caribbean - where I spent a year sailing and painting and eating mangos. Red, gold and green felt right. The spinnakers are so large you can't actually see the sailboats behind them. That's the point - it's about the colour and the energy of the racing, not the boats. I used palette knives throughout, which gives you that immediate, forceful mark. The sea is swirling turquoise and Prussian blue. You feel like you're on a boat just ahead, watching these three trying to catch you.
