  • Artwork Description

    A loose gathering of skiers stands around their ESF instructor at the Beauchard meeting point, Les Grands Montets. His red suit marks him unmistakably. The group listens with the focused incomprehension of British skiers receiving rapid French instruction. Around them the scene is busy and alive — jackets and salopettes in yellow, turquoise, mauve and green; figures adjusting boots, chatting, clipping into bindings. One snowboarder stands among them, subtly noted. The painting captures the hopeful, slightly chaotic atmosphere of the moment before a ski day properly begins.

  • Artist's Insight

    Anyone who's skied in France knows this moment: a group of British skiers nodding politely while a French instructor explains the plan in rapid French. This was inspired by the Beauchard meeting area at Les Grands Montets, where groups traditionally assemble. I always loved the mix of optimism, confusion, and the quiet hope that everyone would still be smiling by lunchtime.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
