  • Artwork Description

    Two skiers share a steep, open descent, the composition running diagonally downhill. The foreground skier cuts hard, wearing a red jacket that punches through the otherwise cool palette. Behind and above, a second figure is half-lost in a cloud of disturbed powder. The sky is broken into layers of turquoise, grey and white, with light filtering through in an abstract way that heightens altitude and exposure. Texture is worked heavily through the snow surface as the painting sits right on the boundary between realism and abstraction.

  • Artist's Insight

    This came from skiing terrain where you don't really stop — you just keep moving and trust the line. Having two skiers in the frame adds a sense of shared risk and unspoken understanding. You're not racing, but you're very aware of each other. That mutual awareness — without words, just movement — is what I wanted to capture.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
