Ritherdon Road, Saturday Morning

by Johny Midnight

Saturday morning outside Gallery Midnight - park runners in Lycra, queues at Dee Light Bakery and Crumble the dog working the crowd for scraps. Painted with bright, irresistible cartoonish energy.

  • Artwork Description

Viewed from directly outside Gallery Midnight, this painting captures the animated ritual of a Saturday morning on Ritherdon Road. Dee Light Bakery and the gallery sit side by side, their frontages anchoring a scene of cheerful pavement choreography. Park runners cluster in conversation, coffees in hand, baguettes tucked under arms. Some settle at tables; others drift past mid-exchange. Queues form, greetings are traded, and in the foreground, Crumble - a well-known local dog - circles hopefully between chairs. The brushwork is loose and exaggerated, simplified forms and heightened colour amplifying the vibrancy of a South London Saturday at its most familiar.

  • Artist's Insight

This painting is about the ritual of Saturday morning on our street. The park runners arrive, the queue forms outside Dee Light Bakery, and for a couple of hours the pavement outside the gallery becomes the centre of the neighbourhood. Crumble is always there, working his way between tables looking for anything that's fallen. I painted it in a looser, more cartoonish style than earlier Ritherdon Road works - because Saturday morning has that kind of energy. It's a weekly ritual, and painting it felt like documenting something that matters.
