  • Artwork Description

Created entirely in Photoshop, this panoramic artwork stretches across the full width of Ritherdon Road in SW17. The red-brick Victorian terrace forms a rhythmic architectural backdrop, punctuated by blossom trees in full bloom. Every shopfront is rendered with accuracy - Gallery Midnight, the French café, the Dovetail antiques shop - grounding the scene in real SW17 geography. The pavement becomes a theatre of invention: dog walkers, cyclists, children on scooters, families with coffees, people spilling out of cafés mid-conversation. A few figures are personal, including members of Johny's own family, but most are imagined, assembled to represent the diverse everyday movement of Tooting and Balham.

  • Artist's Insight

This painting is a portrait of the street I live on as it was in 2011. I built the whole thing in Photoshop, which gave me total control over the perspective and scale. I wanted to include everyone - the dog walkers, the kids on bikes, the people eating outside the French café, and the odd character from Dovetail. A few of my family are hidden in there too. Of the shops I painted, only Gallery Midnight remains. That gives the work a historical weight I wasn't planning for at the time, but I'm glad it exists.
