  • Artwork Description

    A robin perches at a window, examining its own reflection, while the left half of the canvas is given entirely to a wall of old London stock brick, painted with as much care as the bird itself. A small yellow happy-face, graffiti-style, sits within the brickwork. The palette is muted and urban, warmed by the robin's breast and the little scrap of yellow. It is a city painting as much as a wildlife one - nature settled comfortably into a South London wall.

  • Artist's Insight

    This is a cheeky little robin looking at its own reflection in someone's window. The left side is old London stock brick, and I probably spent as long on the brickwork as on the bird - it mattered, because this is a robin living in an urban spot, making friends with the people inside the house. The small yellow happy-face brings in a bit of the graffiti you find on these streets, and lets it into an otherwise pretty picture.

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham.
