  • Artwork Description

    Johny places the horizon precisely at the midpoint of this canvas, dividing a vivid lavender and purple sky from a churning sea of electric turquoise and dark Prussian blue. The sailboat is large and central, its white sail painted with direct, assured marks - almost luminous against the intensity of the sky behind it. There is no ambiguity in the colour: this is the Caribbean at its most theatrical. The painting has the boldness of a poster and the atmosphere of a seascape, holding both without compromise.

  • Artist's Insight

    This is from my time in the Caribbean - that extraordinary moment when the sky just turns a pure lavender. I placed the horizon dead centre, which gives the painting an unusual stillness despite everything going on around it. The boat is there to anchor the scale but it's not the subject. The subject is the sky and that electric turquoise sea responding to it. I wanted the colour to be absolutely unapologetic. No subtlety - just that pure, vivid lavender and the sea lit up underneath it.

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
