  • Artwork Description

    Six blue tits perch and tumble along a single wire, one hanging upside down beside a companion who seems to question his sanity. To the left, a lone robin sits apart, watching the antics with a faintly despondent air. The birds are painted with real, observed accuracy, set against a graded ground that runs from sky blue down to soft, hazy green. Bright, warm and full of character, it turns a common garden scene into a small comedy.

  • Artist's Insight

    I have watched birds since I was a child, and blue tits are pure mischief. I wanted six of them larking about on the wire, one upside down, and then a single robin off to the side, thoroughly unimpressed with the younger crowd it shares the sky with. The graded summer background keeps it warm and light. It is affectionate more than anything - the characters of birds I have spent hours watching.
