  • Artwork Description

    An expansive mountain panorama opens across the canvas in pale whites, soft greys and muted mauves. Snow-covered peaks recede into distance, their edges lost in drifting cloud. Snow-laden firs anchor the left foreground. Four skiers stand along the ridge: parents pausing slightly behind as their children move ahead, one child carving an independent line into untouched snow. The figures are small against the landscape - charcoal grey with restrained hints of colour. The sky carries muted pinks and magentas, suggesting late afternoon alpine light. This is not a dramatic moment. It is memory.

  • Artist's Insight

    In this painting the mountain environment strips away distraction, leaving only light, weather and family connection. By muting the figures I prevented it from becoming a literal portrait - instead the family becomes universal. The slightly anxious glance of the parents toward the off-piste child introduces quiet narrative tension: a reminder of both freedom and responsibility.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
