  • Artwork Description

    The horizon sits at the midpoint of this canvas, dividing a dark, restless sea from a sky of deep dramatic purple. The sailboat is large and central, its white sails painted with minimal detail - almost a ghost against the intensity of sky and water. Flashes of turquoise cut through the purple overhead and ripple through the dark Prussian blue and vibrant turquoise of the ocean below. Johny treats the painting less as documentation and more as an emotional record of a particular quality of Caribbean light.

  • Artist's Insight

    This is from my time in the Caribbean - specifically that moment when the sky turns an extraordinary purple and the sea responds to it. I placed the horizon dead centre, which gives the painting an unusual stillness despite the drama all around. The boat is almost incidental - it's there to anchor the composition and give the scale, but it's not the subject. The sky is the subject. The turquoise breaks through the purple like electricity. I wanted it to feel charged.

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
