  • Artwork Description

    Four figures occupy a sunlit slope beneath a deep blue-and-turquoise sky - the most vivid and warmly lit family scene in the collection. The father leads in blue jacket on red skis; the mother follows in red, her daughter in a soft mauve jacket alongside. At the edge of the composition, a young boy has tucked and gone - fully committed to speed, entirely undeterred by the family formation he has just overtaken. The foreground snow is heavily textured, thick white paint over grey and turquoise. The painting is warm, funny, and entirely familiar.

  • Artist's Insight

    This came from watching families ski together - where most are happy cruising along, and then suddenly one child decides they're in a World Cup race. Equal parts nerves, laughter and pride. It could be anywhere from France to Italy to Switzerland. Every skiing family has a crazy kid.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
