  • Artwork Description

    Rendered predominantly in soft whites and cool greys, this painting captures one of those rare days when London snow falls and holds. Bare winter branches frame the composition, and across the Common, figures scatter in silhouette - parents and children building snowmen, some sitting in the snow, others pulling sledges or walking dogs. Small snowmen repeat quietly through the landscape, echoing one another across the white expanse. Subtle hints of pink and beige warm the distant horizon, suggesting clearing skies, while touches of pale blue reinforce the crispness of the air. Despite the limited palette, the painting feels lively - movement suggested through gesture, collective excitement captured in near-monochrome.

  • Artist's Insight

    Snow days in London are rare enough that when they happen, everyone behaves differently. People come out who never come out. The Common fills up with parents who've taken the day off, kids who've forgotten everything except the fact that there's snow. I kept the palette almost entirely monochrome because that's what snow does - it simplifies the world. The snowmen become these little repeated gestures across the canvas, each one a collaboration between a parent and a child. It's a very temporary thing - snow in London doesn't last - and I think the painting holds that fragility.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
