  • Artwork Description

    Painted after a November visit to Blakeney Spit, Norfolk, where grey seals gather each autumn to pup. This young seal rests on wet sand, painted in warm terracotta orange that catches the moisture in the light. The background is bright and abstract - purples, turquoises, layered and atmospheric. The seal itself is rendered with care; its eyes are the centrepiece: huge, dark and entirely guileless. Johny builds the animal from its environment, the creature emerging from the paint rather than sitting apart from it.

  • Artist's Insight

    After visiting the grey seals at Blakeney Spit during November pupping season, I knew I had to paint one. You smell them before you see them - but they are really quite beautiful creatures. This little guy seemed quite happy on his own. The sand looks wet because I painted it with bright terracotta orange. The background is still quite abstract - bright purples and turquoises. But the main point of this picture was the pup's eyes. Huge, dark and loving. Completely irresistible. I defy anyone not to fall a little bit in love.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
