Somerset Blackbird

Somerset Blackbird

by Johny Midnight

A Somerset fingerpost points three ways through a summer hedgerow. A blackbird has claimed the Shepton Mallet arm as his own. Behind him, cornfields and a wide blue sky.

  • Artwork Description

The old county fingerpost is painted with the kind of precision that lets you read the miles - Bruton two and a quarter, Frome seven. The hedgerow behind it is dense, almost mosaic in its texture, built up in thick, interlocking marks of green and dark. A blackbird perches on the Shepton Mallet arm with complete authority, watching. The sky is a straightforward Somerset blue, the kind that arrives on still summer days and stays. At the base of the post, a few autumn leaves have crept into the foreground - a quiet reminder that nothing in the countryside stays at its peak for long.

  • Artist's Insight

I paint signposts because they carry so much character and history without trying to. This one outside Bruton has been there for decades, the letters slightly worn, the paint layered. The blackbird landing on it was the detail that made the composition - suddenly it had a protagonist, someone to own the scene. I painted the hedgerow almost as an abstract, building up the texture so it feels properly dense and impenetrable, the way a Somerset hedge actually is.
