Somerset Wildlife

Somerset Wildlife

by Johny Midnight

The Bruton dovecote, punchy and abstract. A cow holds court in the bottom corner, looking directly at you. The sky crackles with turquoise and light breaking through cloud.

  • Artwork Description

This is not a quiet landscape painting. The dovecote stands at the centre under a sky that has been worked in oil and acrylic - turquoises and blues colliding, sunlight forcing its way through cloud and hitting the stone side-on. The ground below is patches of fluorescent green, orange, and dark turquoise, the kind of palette that makes a Somerset field feel electric rather than pastoral. In the bottom right corner, a Friesian cow looks directly out of the frame with the calm certainty of an animal that owns the land. Flashes of bright magenta appear in the dovecote's shadows. It is the same view, rendered at full volume.

  • Artist's Insight

I wanted to do the dovecote justice without being polite about it. The building has real presence on that hill and I thought it deserved a painting with some aggression in it - colour turned up, sky made physical, the whole thing a bit louder than the landscape usually allows itself to be. The cow was a late addition but once she was in, looking out at you, the painting suddenly had attitude. She is the Somerset countryside speaking for itself.
