  • Artwork Description

    A family is stopped on a snowy slope in the quiet before skiing starts. A mother kneels, doing up a child's jacket with the patience of someone who has done this many times before. The child's body language suggests mild resistance. Behind them, the father waits with the other child and skis over his shoulder, the subtle frustration of someone ready to move visible in his stance. Snow-laden firs rise on either side, rounded and heavy, almost like snowmen. The palette is soft grey, white and gentle teal - understated, domestic, and entirely recognisable.

  • Artist's Insight

    This painting is about family life on the mountain - not the skiing itself, but everything that surrounds it. The stopping, waiting, helping and negotiating. It's the quiet chaos that happens before the fun starts. I thought it could easily be on the front of a chocolate box - a Boxing Day morning skiing. Perfect.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
