  • Artwork Description

    Two boats dominate the foreground of this seascape, their spinnakers - one yellow-gold and blue, the other red and white - filling the canvas with colour and movement. Behind them, a fleet of smaller vessels diminishes toward the horizon, creating a strong sense of depth and competitive energy. The ocean is painted in Johny's characteristic palette of Prussian blue, turquoise and white foam. The sky is broad and atmospheric, grey-white with strong flashes of turquoise. You are positioned directly in the boats' path, on a choppy open ocean day.

  • Artist's Insight

    I wanted to give the impression of the boats coming straight at you - those spinnakers just bearing down from above. Two large boats up front and behind them, a whole fleet stretching back. The sea is rough, with the Prussian blues and turquoise and the white horses I keep coming back to. The sky was about that dramatic grey-white light you get before the weather changes. It's a choppy day on the water, and you feel it.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
