Spiro

Spiro

by Johny Midnight

A spirograph of white, yellow and green lines spins over an explosive abstract ground of blue, red, orange and black - created by swinging a paint-filled pot from the gallery ceiling. Controlled chaos.

  • Artwork Description

The entire canvas is alive with motion: spiralling white lines arc and overlap across a field of deep blue, volcanic red, orange, yellow and black, their paths intersecting and receding like the traces of orbiting bodies. The technique was physical - a pot of paint suspended from the ceiling of the gallery on a pendulum, the canvas rotating beneath it. The resulting marks are both perfectly random and, in their repetition, deeply ordered. This is a painting that could be a universe, an atom, or simply - as Johny admits - one big crazy mess. It contains multitudes.

  • Artist's Insight

I was inspired by the Spirograph - that game where you use a rotating disc to make geometric patterns. I wanted to do something similar but on a much larger, more physical scale. I hung a pot of paint from the ceiling of the gallery on a pendulum, let it swing, and simultaneously rotated the canvas beneath it. The paint dripped and traced these spiralling patterns. I then worked additional colour and line over the top. It could be a universe. Or just one big crazy mess. Both feel right to me.
