  • Artwork Description

    The composition stretches wide and low, the diver suspended on a diagonal across a shimmering expanse of pale turquoise and faded green. Johny works three techniques into a single scene: the figure rendered in dense pointillist dabs, the treeline scratched back into wet oil to leave a textured relief, and the changing cabins painted plainly in blocks of red, yellow and blue. Sky and water hold most of the canvas, giving the moment air and light. The effect is bright and buoyant - a familiar South London summer caught between the board and the water.

  • Artist's Insight

    I wanted this one to feel different from the other lido paintings, so I built it from three ways of working at once. The diver is all tiny dots, the way Seurat might have done it. The trees are scratched straight into the oil, almost a relief you could run your fingers over. The cabins I kept simple and real. Put them together and you get something light and bright - the feeling of throwing yourself into the water on a good day. I hope it reminds you of your own mornings at Tooting Bec.
