Spring Aiguille
Spring Aiguille
by Johny Midnight
The Aiguille du Midi in spring morning light, painted with unusual realism. Warm brown rock breaks through brilliant white snow. The arete leading to the Vallee Blanche is clearly visible. A love letter to the best ski day in the Alps.
Limited edition fine art prints, hand-signed and numbered by the artist. Once the edition is sold out, it will not be reproduced.

Artwork Description
Spring Aiguille is Johny Midnight at his most realistic - this is not abstract mountain feeling but a precise, committed portrait of the Aiguille du Midi as it actually looks on a clear spring morning. The mountain is painted from close range, slightly below the summit, so the viewer feels the exposure of the altitude. Warm, reddish-brown rock faces break through the brilliant white snowpack, their texture carefully rendered with tonal gradations that capture the way light falls across stone at high altitude. The arete descending from the summit - the ridge walkers must cross to begin the Vallee Blanche - is clearly readable in the composition. A small human figure is barely visible on the slope below, establishing an extraordinary sense of scale. The sky is luminous blue with wispy high-altitude cloud trails giving way to open space. The telecom mast at the very summit confirms exactly which peak this is.

Artist's Insight
You take the cable car up to 3,850 metres, put on your crampons, strap your skis to your rucksack, and descend the ridge to start the Vallee Blanche - the best one-day ski you will ever do. This painting is about that moment of commitment, standing on the arete, looking down. I chose to work more realistically here than in most of my mountain paintings - not because I have abandoned my instinct for abstraction, but because some moments are so vivid and so specific that they resist invention. The brown rock, the white snow, the blue sky. The cold. The exposure. The knowledge that you are about to do something extraordinary. Every brushstroke in this painting comes from lived time on that mountain.
