  • Artwork Description

Painted from a straight-on perspective, this work centres on the iconic row of coloured changing cabins along the lido's edge, each door clearly defined and mirrored crisply in the water below. The composition creates a strong horizontal rhythm - cabin, reflection, repetition — that gives the painting a quality of symmetry and calm. The trees behind are full of fresh spring foliage, suggesting seasonal renewal. The sky, however, retains soft greys and muted tones - an overcast London morning rather than full sunshine. The water is handled more abstractly, brushwork and layered paint creating movement and texture across the surface while the reflections hold their structure. It is a painting about presence - the simple pleasure of being poolside before the swimmers arrive.

  • Artist's Insight

This is one of my more restrained lido paintings. I chose the direct, architectural viewpoint because I wanted the cabins and their reflections to be the whole story - symmetry, colour, repetition. No crowd, no drama. The sky is honest: it's grey, because that's often what spring mornings look like at the lido. I treated the water more loosely than the cabins, which gives the painting a gentle tension between the structured and the fluid. I'm interested in the lido before it gets busy - that quality of stillness that you only experience if you arrive early and stand there quietly for a moment.
