  • Artwork Description

    The canvas is saturated with colour - deep reds, teals, cobalt blues, golds and dark greens in thick, heavily textured layers. A large abstract tree fills the upper portion; a red stag, rendered in silhouette, stands in the middle distance. The painting's orientation was not fixed until all the paint had been applied - Johny found the landscape within the abstraction rather than imposing it. The result is a painting where the natural world feels genuinely discovered rather than depicted: the stag appears, the tree asserts itself, the horizon settles. Abstraction and nature in complete collaboration.

  • Artist's Insight

    The painting was never decided - even which way up it was - until all the paint had been laid onto the canvas. Then I decided it was perhaps a landscape, and I silhouetted the stag into it. On the left you can perhaps see a tree that blends into the sky; it's hard to know if the sky is not part of the tree's foliage. I work this way sometimes - letting the painting tell me what it is. The stag was always there, I just had to find it.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
