  • Artwork Description

    Raw cardboard provides the ground for this stripped-back urban composition. Two tall telegraph poles dominate the vertical space, rendered in black and dark marks; wires stretch between them and across the canvas. A tiny figure - barely an inch high - walks the wire midway up, arms out, balancing. Splashes of teal, white and black fall across the warm brown ground; a tyre hangs from one pole; scattered marks suggest a city too vast and indifferent to notice. The cardboard ground is integral - its texture and colour becoming sky, wall and street simultaneously.

  • Artist's Insight

    I painted this on cardboard because I wanted the rawness of the material to be part of the painting. The cardboard becomes the background - the sky, the urban air - without me having to paint it. The telegraph poles and wires are the structure of the piece, and the tiny figure on the wire is both the subject and the joke. How small we are against the infrastructure of the city. How much courage it takes just to keep going. I like paintings that look effortless but aren't.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
