Stepping Stones

Stepping Stones

by Johny Midnight

Four children cross the river through Bruton on stepping stones. The old village buildings rise behind them. Clear water, careful balance, and one stick held for good measure.

  • Artwork Description

The River Brue runs through Bruton and the stepping stones have been a draw for children for as long as anyone can remember. This painting places four of them mid-crossing, in various states of commitment. The girl at the front - auburn hair, white T-shirt, rolled-up trousers - straddles two large stones with her arms spread wide. Behind her, a girl looks close to losing her footing. A boy further back holds a stick over the water. Another sits and watches from the bank. The buildings of the old English village frame the scene from behind: stone walls, an archway, worn steps. The water is clear and reflective, detailed enough to see through to the riverbed.

  • Artist's Insight

Children on stepping stones are fundamentally the same in every generation - the concentration, the arms going out, the absolute commitment to not getting wet and then getting wet anyway. I wanted to paint that universal thing in a very specific Bruton location. The architecture behind them grounds it - you know exactly where you are. I worked hard on the water because it needed to feel real: clear, moving, cold. The painting is about joy and about place in equal measure.
