Sundowner

Sundowner

by Johny Midnight

Two ghostly white sailboats push through heavy, turquoise-dark swells beneath an overwhelming magenta and purple sky. A large, deeply atmospheric canvas about the emotional charge of the ocean at dusk.

  • Artwork Description

The horizon sits a third of the way up this large, expansive canvas, giving full reign to the sky - magenta, lavender and white, painted with the backs of spoons and credit cards rather than brushes, creating a surface of exceptional texture and unpredictability. Two white sailboats labour through a choppy, turquoise and dark-toned sea, their forms almost translucent against the atmospheric light. There is a deliberate ambiguity: this could be a Caribbean sunset or the Solent before a storm. The painting makes no distinction. Movement, colour and unease are its real subject.

  • Artist's Insight

I painted this entirely without brushes - spoons, credit cards, palette knives. It gives you a surface that has its own will, which I love. The sky is the whole painting really: is that magenta a sunset or a storm? I wanted to leave that open. The two sailboats are ghostly, almost white - they're there to give you the sense of being on the water, just behind them, trying to get to port. The idea is the sundowner: that drink you have when you finally get in. You want it. You're not quite there.
