  • Artwork Description

This large canvas presents Tooting Bec Lido at dawn, the sky moving through abstract layers of orange, pink and magenta in loose, expressive marks while the treeline behind the lido holds its ground with greater realism. The iconic coloured changing cabins stretch along the pool's edge, each door painted crisply and reflected vividly in the water below. The vast surface of the pool mirrors both cabins and sky, rippling the colour gently across its expanse. A lone early-morning swimmer punctuates the water - a single figure in a nearly empty pool, the solitary ritual of the committed swimmer captured in a moment of quiet intensity. Calm, luminous and unmistakably South London.

  • Artist's Insight

This painting was about a fleeting and almost sacred moment - 7 o'clock in the morning, the sun just rising, one swimmer in the water and the whole lido to themselves. I painted the sky loosely and expressively because at that hour the light is constantly changing and can't be pinned down. The cabins I kept more structured - they're the anchor, the thing that places you firmly at Tooting Bec regardless of what the sky is doing. The reflections in the water were the emotional centre of the painting. The swimmer is barely there, but their presence changes everything: from landscape to story.
