Tack Tack

Tack Tack

by Johny Midnight

A sailing painting with no sailboat - only the white foam trails left in the water as the boat turns away. The second of Johny's conceptual seascapes where the vessel is defined entirely by its absence.

Limited edition fine art prints, hand-signed and numbered by the artist. Once the edition is sold out, it will not be reproduced.

  • Artwork Description

Johny returns to his most conceptually bold idea - the sailing painting from which the boat has been removed. In Tack Tack, the viewer looks back at white foam trails marking the course corrections of a vessel that has moved on. Oil, watercolour and acrylic are worked together to create the chemistry of the wake: white tendrils and bursts of foam on deep Prussian blue and turquoise, the surface resisting control. Only the painting's title - the nautical command for changing course - anchors the scene to sailing at all.

  • Artist's Insight

Like Lee Ho, this is a sailing painting without a sailboat. This time you're looking back at the marks in the water - the trails the boat has left as it's tacked, turned, changed direction. The white foam on the dark sea is the only evidence that anything has been there. I use oil, watercolour and acrylic together here - the chemistry between them creates patterns you can't predict or repeat, which is what makes each painting genuinely original. The title tells you everything. Without it, it's the ocean.
