Take a Look, Then Look Again

Take a Look, Then Look Again

by Johny Midnight

Pure abstraction, and deliberately so. Turquoise breaks over a dense mass of red, orange and green, poured, splattered and scratched into texture. Nothing is named, so what surfaces in it is entirely down to the viewer.

  • Artwork Description

A band of turquoise runs across the upper canvas, streaked with fine dark lines and drifting into white. Beneath it the surface erupts: crimson and burnt orange at the centre, yellow spreading outwards, greens and pinks pooling below. Paint is poured, flicked, dripped and scraped, layered thickly enough to hold the light. No figure or landmark anchors the composition. Forms suggest themselves and dissolve again depending on where the eye settles, which is the point - the work stays open rather than resolving into a subject.

  • Artist's Insight

Usually I get halfway through a painting like this, start seeing things in it, and then build them up - creatures, characters, sometimes mystical, sometimes real. This time I left it alone. I can still see plenty in there that could have been drawn out, but I wanted the work to stay open. It is a bit like cloud busting. Two people look at the same cloud and one sees an elephant, the other a giraffe, and it keeps shifting as it moves. Everyone will find something different here, and that is the interesting part.
