  • Artwork Description

The Atlantic Rally for Cruisers - known as the ARC - brings together professional and amateur sailors each year for a transatlantic crossing from Europe to the Caribbean. Johny's painting captures the scale of that crossing without documenting any individual moment. Dozens of white sails push across a deep, dark ocean of Prussian blue and turquoise, the horizon barely visible through masts and moving water. The boats are the vehicle, not the subject - it is the immensity of the sea, and the human impulse to cross it, that the painting is really about.

  • Artist's Insight

The ARC is this remarkable thing - a convoy of boats crossing the Atlantic together, from Europe to the Caribbean. Professional sailors, amateurs, all crossing together as a kind of safety net. The scale of it stuck with me. I painted very dark Prussian blues with white horses and flashes of turquoise to give you the feeling of the ocean. I never spend too much time on the boats themselves - they're there to create perspective and distance across the water. The ocean is the subject.
