  • Artwork Description

The composition is entirely aerial: a white cup and saucer fill the canvas, the coffee surface showing a hummingbird formed in cream or foam - painted with delicate, gestural precision. A silver spoon rests on the saucer. The cup itself is rendered in thick, impasto white, its surface alive with texture. Around it, the background is a densely worked field of blue, red, teal, purple and ochre - loose, swirling brushmarks recalling the surface of Monet's water lily paintings seen at close range. A painting about London's coffee culture, and about the small, daily rituals that feel like art.

  • Artist's Insight

I'm astounded how the coffee culture in London has taken off - a coffee is now more expensive than a beer, and yet we all love it. It's become part of the culture of this country, taken over from the tea shops. The hummingbird in the foam is the coffee art - baristas do extraordinary things. The background feels like a Monet water lily painting, heavily textured and quite loose. It's a small painting, but I think it captures something true about a moment in London life.
