The Dovecot
The Dovecot
by Johny Midnight
The Bruton dovecote on the hill, with a family below it on a wide green field. A sky built in pointillist dabs of purple, blue, and turquoise - somewhere between sunshine and rain.

Artwork Description
The dovecote rises from the hill with its usual authority, but this time it has company. In the foreground, a family moves across the grass - a father bent down to his daughter's coat, a mother holding a small hand beside her, two figures closer to the tower perhaps running, perhaps chasing each other. The field is impressionistic, soft greens and yellows laid loosely across the ground. The sky is the most worked part of the canvas, built in a near-pointillist method: dabs of bright purple, blue, and turquoise that give it energy and uncertainty. The light comes through, but so might the rain. A painting of an afternoon in Somerset that could belong to almost any family.

Artist's Insight
Everyone who lives around Bruton knows the dovecote walk - up the hill, around the field, back down for lunch or a drink. I wanted to paint it as an experience rather than just a building. The family in the foreground came from watching people up there on a Sunday - the way adults slow down and children run ahead. The sky gave me the most pleasure. I kept adding dabs of colour until it felt properly alive, uncertain about what it was about to do.
