The Eiger
The Eiger

Artwork Description
This commission depicts the Eiger in close-up - the viewer is placed almost on the mountain rather than looking at it from a distance. The painting is dominated by white, ice-blue, and grey, built up with heavy textured marks that give the snow and ice a genuine physical weight on the canvas. The mountain fills the composition from edge to edge, with very little sky visible. Where rock breaks through the snowpack, it appears in dark graphite and warm brown tones - the only warmth in an otherwise cold, icy scene. The sky at the top of the canvas is pale lavender and grey, barely distinguishable from the upper snowfields. This is a painting about proximity and cold - the feeling of being close enough to touch the rock and ice, in a place where the weather determines everything.

Artist's Insight
This painting was made for a paraponter who flew around the Eiger regularly. For him the mountain was not a distant spectacle - it was something he moved alongside, close to its faces, reading its ridges and knowing its moods from the air. I wanted to honour that relationship by painting the Eiger from close up, not from a postcard distance. The heavy impasto textures across the snow and ice fields were applied to give the surface a physical reality - this is not smooth, polished mountain scenery. It is cold, exposed, and immediate. He knew this mountain. The painting needed to feel like he did.
