A print-making experiment that grew out of a children's workshop, where an offhand remark - that a rolled shape looked like a raspberry - became a whole tree of them. Bright, cheerful and loose, built with a radiator-roller sponge.

  • Artwork Description

    Rolled and sponged marks build a canopy of soft reds and pinks against a light ground, the raspberry forms clustering like fruit on an improvised tree. There is no attempt at botanical accuracy - the shapes stay abstract, printed rather than drawn, and the texture of the roller remains visible throughout. The mood is bright and unforced, a painting made in the spirit of play and kept that way.

  • Artist's Insight

    This came out of a session showing children how much fun print-making can be. One of them said the shape I was rolling looked like a raspberry, and that decided it - I grew a whole tree of them. I kept it light on purpose. Some paintings are about weather or place or endurance. This one is about the simple joy of making a mark and following where it goes.

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
