  • Artwork Description

    An adult in an orange-red jacket guides two young children - perhaps four or five years old - through a quiet off-piste section framed by snow-laden fir trees. The snow is gentle, just a few inches deep, and the slope is calm rather than intimidating. The children are small, slightly tentative, entirely engaged. The background glows softly with distant mountains through mist, and the trees in the middle ground are heavy with snow, rounded and almost fantastical. The palette is restrained and wintry, with warm tones in the adult's jacket the only strong colour note.

    The best moments in skiing often happen away from the crowds. This painting is about that first step off the piste - leaving the busy runs behind and finding a quiet line through the mountain. For children, it's a small adventure that feels enormous. What will they tell their friends?

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
