  • Artwork Description

    A sea turtle glides low over a textured coral reef, the water around it calm and clear while, higher up, light breaks through a rougher, stormier surface. The reef is built from palette scrapings worked into ridged, tactile colour, evoking coral anywhere from the Caribbean to the Great Barrier. Cool blues and warm reef tones meet, and the composition sets serene movement below against turbulence above - a creature entirely at home in its element.

  • Artist's Insight

    As always, the background starts with scrapings from my palette, laid on to stand for coral - Caribbean, Indian Ocean, Great Barrier Reef, take your pick. On land these creatures are cumbersome, heavy and unhappy, but in the water they glide - beautiful, hungry and, when they eat, quite ferocious. I let the light come through from the waves above, where it might be stormy, while underneath the water stays calm and the turtle just glides over the reef.

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
