  • Artwork Description

    A family of four moves through driving white in a near-monochrome painting of quiet tenderness. Both adults carry skis and hold a child's hand - the two youngest figures flanked and protected as they push through snow. The background is almost entirely dissolved: pale grey-white with barely visible fir trees and a hint of mountain. The foreground is heavily textured, the snow physical and present. All four are painted in restrained dark tones, the family unit cohesive and self-contained within the vast cold space around them.

    I watched this kind of family moment again and again around the Chamonix Valley - the way parents instinctively flanked the smallest children in bad weather, the way the group became a single unit against the cold. Skiing isn't just about the runs; it's about being together, watching your children find their feet, and enjoying the small perfect moments that become the memories you keep.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
