  • Artwork Description

    A sea turtle rises through a densely coloured reef, breaking up towards light that filters from the surface above. The coral is built from a year of palette scrapings, heavily textured and using an enormous range of colour to catch the variety of a Caribbean reef. The turtle moves with easy purpose through it all. Rich, warm and tactile, the painting rewards close looking, its surface as alive as the scene it describes.

  • Artist's Insight

    This is a turtle breaking through the coral and seaweed of a Caribbean ocean, with the light coming down from above. I think just about every colour has gone into the coral, which I know well from years spent snorkelling and playing with the leatherbacks and hawksbills. Lovely creatures - though run out of food and they will bite your toes. The background starts, as ever, with the scrapings off my palette. If it feels like coral, something has to live in it.
