Tooting Trolley
Tooting Trolley
by Johny Midnight
An abandoned Sainsbury's trolley among autumn leaves on Tooting Bec Common - slightly absurd and quietly poetic, painted with exactly the same care and attention as the gnarled tree beside it.

Artwork Description
The composition centres on a solitary gnarled tree in the foreground, rendered with careful textural attention. Beneath it, resting among a thick carpet of fallen leaves, sits a discarded shopping trolley - its orange handles quietly recognisable. The ground is built up in layered autumn tones: a quilt-like mosaic of ochres, rusts and muted golds. A misty pathway stretches into the distance, soft beams of light filtering through the trees and dissolving into pale haze. There are no figures present - only the suggestion of human presence through what has been left behind. The trolley, painted with the same consideration as the tree, elevates the overlooked into something worth sustained attention.

Artist's Insight
I walk through Tooting Bec Common every morning on my way to the gallery. One day there was a shopping trolley sitting under the tree - someone had left it there overnight. I took a photograph and I knew immediately it was a painting. The orange handles make it unmistakably a Sainsbury's trolley, which I hadn't planned. I thought about adding a squirrel pushing it, but I held back. The painting works because of the contrast between the natural and the abandoned: a beautifully textured tree beside this intrusion of urban life. It's slightly absurd and quite honest about what the Common actually looks like.
