A lone cyclist crests Mont Ventoux - the Bald Mountain - its famous white limestone road stretching behind him. A handful of riders straggle below. The summit feels earned and absolute.

  • Artwork Description

A single rider climbs the final stretch of Mont Ventoux, the most feared climb in the Tour de France. The Provençal giant's distinctive white limestone road - above the treeline, bare and bleached - stretches behind him as he nears the summit. Below, a small group of riders fights its own battle with the gradient. The figures are painted with a stylistic, almost illustrative clarity - screen-like in their graphic quality - set against the mountain's stark, abstracted terrain. The painting captures what Ventoux always demands: isolation, effort, and the strange beauty of suffering at altitude.

  • Artist's Insight

Ventoux is unlike any other climb in the Tour - above a certain point the trees stop and you're on bare white limestone. It looks like the moon. The mountain strips everything away from the riders and from the viewers: there's no crowd, no shade, no mercy. I painted the figure in a stylistic, screen-print manner because Ventoux itself is almost unreal. The white rocks are not painted naturalistically - they have an abstract quality. A few riders stragggling behind the lead man. That's what the mountain does. It separates people.
