Tour de Soleil

  • Artwork Description

The peloton sits at the very horizon of the canvas - a tight band of twenty riders, jerseys bright against the flat French landscape - while sunflowers fill the entire foreground with saturated yellow, green and burnt orange. Above them, the sky is painted in a pointillist fashion: thousands of mosaic dots descending from deep blue at the top to a lighter, more luminous blue towards the horizon. The composition is deliberately joyful - a celebration of the Tour de France as a seasonal event, part of the French summer as surely as the sunflowers themselves.

  • Artist's Insight

Every year when the Tour de France goes through the French countryside, you see field after field of sunflowers. They're everywhere. I wanted to paint that image - the peloton on the horizon, the sunflowers in the foreground, the sky above. The sky I painted in a pointillist, mosaic-dot fashion - it gives it a brightness and a vibrancy that feels right for high summer. The riders are closely packed, anonymous at that distance, but you know exactly what they're doing. It's bright, it's poppy, and it's very French.
