  • Artwork Description

    This large canvas presents Albert Bridge in a sweeping, radiant view, the river stretching wide before it. Johny paints the structure with expressive, joyful brushstrokes - the bridge's signature pinks, yellows, blues and oranges rendered in what he describes as slapstick colour. The effect is uplifting and almost musical, architectural beauty meeting painterly freedom. Behind the bridge, the London skyline rises gently: the Shard glinting to one side, Battersea Power Station anchoring the other. In the lower left, houseboats rest along the embankment, adding life and scale. The sky shifts from pale blue to soft grey - London's characteristic uncertainty - while reflections of the towers ripple in turquoise and lavender across the Thames.

  • Artist's Insight

    Uncle Albert is about joy. Albert Bridge has this extraordinary colour palette already built into it - the pinks, the yellows - so I leaned into that as hard as I could. I wanted the painting to feel bright and delightful, which is exactly how the bridge feels on a good day. I used the London skyline in the background because the bridge exists within that context: the Shard and Battersea Power Station remind you it's modern London, even though the bridge itself could belong to another century. The reflections in the water were the most important element for me — they give the painting its sense of movement.

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
