  • Artwork Description

    A lone skier is nearly swallowed by deep powder, the surrounding snow built up in thick, cellular, cracked formations of white and teal paint that dominate the canvas. The figure is small and dark at the composition's centre, anchoring an extraordinary surface - part mountain, part abstraction - that presses inward from all sides. There is no defined horizon, no clear landscape: just the skier and the overwhelming white. This is the feeling of skiing deep powder at the limits of visibility, where the snow is the only reality.

  • Artist's Insight

    This is inspired by skiing off the Argentière Glacier in Chamonix, but it isn't tied to a specific place. It could be Norway, Alaska, or Antarctica. The idea was to paint what it feels like to ski powder - not what it looks like from a distance. When you're in it, everything disappears except the next turn.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
