Weather Ahead

Weather Ahead

by Johny Midnight

Three sailboats push through a dark, heaving ocean as dramatic storm light fills the sky above. A large canvas where the realism of the sky sits in deliberate tension with the abstraction of the boats and sea.

Limited edition fine art prints, hand-signed and numbered by the artist. Once the edition is sold out, it will not be reproduced.

  • Artwork Description

A sky of genuine atmospheric drama - one of the few passages in Johny's work where the sky is treated with relative realism - sits above a dark ocean of Prussian blue, white-capped and violent. Three sailboats navigate the swell, the central one flying a red and turquoise spinnaker. The vessels themselves are abstract and gestural, their detail absorbed into movement and spray. This tension between a painted sky and an abstracted sea is what Johny calls abstract on reality: the difficulty and the achievement of holding both in the same canvas. The painting earns its title entirely.

  • Artist's Insight

This is one of the few times I've gone for a fairly real sky - you can feel the weather coming in, the light breaking through from behind the clouds. And then the ocean is completely abstract, the boats are abstract. Holding both in the same canvas without it falling apart is the challenge. Abstract on reality - that's what a lot of my work is. The sea has those dark Prussian blues and white horses I keep returning to. The central boat has a red and turquoise spinnaker. The weather is ahead. You can see it. You're going anyway.
